You thought these had disappeared, didn’t you?
Well... maybe they did for a little while, but I’ve still been adding many great songs to the Top 10s in Waiting playlist whilst I’ve been stupidly busy the last couple of months!
It’s amazing how much you have on when Boris opens up people’s social lives...
Now this week, the song’s are from my mind. But for the next couple of weeks we have some guest stars and they’ve got throwbacks coming out of their ears! :)
Now remember the list is in no particular order, despite the numbering, and I love all these songs equally. And you can find it here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5uvGPB5HsOhdICfOxGVqDZ?si=4EaeAeT9SsODkPCZXXdrig
NUMBER 10.
Taming the Dinosaurs - Steve Jablonsky

It‘s one of the only songs I listen to on this soundtrack, but it doesn’t make it any less powerful. And the visuals while it’s playing is incredible. It’s a shot of slow-mos of Mark Wahlberg and Kate Hudson driving across the Louisiana Causeway, towards where it’ll take Mike to Deepwater Horizon.
Deepwater Horizon is one of history’s most remembered and catastrophic oil spills, with nearly 210 million gallons of oil leaked into to Gulf of Mexico, causing devastation to wildlife, fisheries, tourism and more, and affecting areas from Texas, all the way to Florida. The film shows the events from the whole crew’s point of view and shows the series of tragic events at Deepwater Horizon that sadly cost 11 people their lives, and affected hundreds of others.
NUMBER 9.
Belfast - Pete Tong

I got introduced to this beautiful track by my work bestie Karen, when she put me in charge of music at her wedding! (A massive honour, and one I made a minor mistake on when my sausage fingers hit the wrong song for them to walk back down the aisle to as Husband and Wife, *facepalm*). But this song is incredible, and believe it or not, done by a classical orchestra, despite sounding electronic. This song will always have a special place in my heart, because Karen and Lee are special people, and ones who ABSOLUTELY have THE best taste in music.
NUMBER 8.
Wands into the Earth - James Newton Howard

James Newton Howard is the king of fantasy to be honest. The daintiness of the other tracks in this soundtrack compared to this one shows the threat and poignancy of this scene above all others. It shows the true threat of Grindelwald whilst also showing the fantasy of the creatures creating the fire. It’s my favourite scene too, despite what happens, because Newt finally picks a side, and we know there’s a hell of a lot more story to come.
NUMBER 7.
Rewrite the Stars - James Arthur and Anne-Marie

I love this song anyway, and when they released these new versions, I was a bit dubious as to what these songs would sound like. But this, along with From Now On by the Zac Brown Band, is my favourite ones. James Arthur and Anne-Marie‘s voices go together so well, this should have been in the film itself. Maybe the credits.
NUMBER 6.
Downtown Abbey Suite - The London Symphony Orchestra

We’ve been juggling many TV shows over lockdown, but Downton has been one of our favourites. And when we got taken to Highclere Castle, it was literally dreams come true to see all the TV show come to life. I love this show, the ups the downs, the outfits, the drama, the intrigue, the excitement. Everything about it. The only problem with it was that it finished... but then again I suppose that‘s why the streaming sites are so great. Because you can watch them over and over.
NUMBER 5.
Scorponok - Steve Jablonsky

Here he is in the flesh. Well... metal. He has such a minor role (causing devastation from underground) and yet he has the best soundtrack call. But I think that’s partly because Michael Bay uses this scene to show off every single plane and fighter jet that the US Air Force has in its arsenal. That said, despite being a bad guy robot, he is probably one of the coolest.
NUMBER 4.
Open Your Eyes - Snow Patrol

I love this one because it‘s so singable. Plus it’s a total throwback for me, and was scarily released 14 years ago. I used to listen to this in the car with my mum, singing harmonies, listening to it over and over again. I think I’ll remember the lyrics to this song until I die... Love me some Snow Patrol.
NUMBER 3.
His Dark Materials - Lorne Balfe

I used to the love these books. I say ‘used to’, I still do... and when I found out it was being made into a TV show I was a bit worried, given the disaster of the movie with Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman. But this was amazing. And I think I’m glad it’s been a series because you get to know a lot more of the story from 8 episodes than you would from a 1.5 hour film. And Dafne Keen as Lyra was an unbelievable cast. Roll on November is all I say.
NUMBER 2.
Beautiful People (feat. Khalid) - Ed Sheeran

My sister and I have a shared playlist on Spotify for when we go on long journeys, one where we put songs in so there is little to no squabbling as each of our choices will eventually get played. I love it mostly because there are more of my songs than hers - simply because I keep adding and she doesn’t - but I also love it because I get to listen to gems like this. My sister’s and my musical minds are completely different... and that’s okay because we teach each other a few things along the way. Or at least I’d like to think so.
NUMBER 1.
Test Drive - John Powell

Hiccup and Toothless’ bond is one of legend. And this is how it’s solidified. You can hear the playfulness in the track, as two friends grow, strengthening their bond whilst learning to fly together. You can sense the terror when Hiccup loses his cheat sheet... Music has such a key role to play in the How To Train Your Dragon movies, and this theme, Hiccup and Toothless’ theme, is poignant throughout. These films are my favourite animated films, sorry Disney, and they will remain that way... and this soundtrack has a huge part to play in that.
***

Ahhhh it felt so good to let that out. I miss these weekly playlists... but it is so busy both at home and at work that I can’t promise they’ll come weekly, but as often as I can. And I’ll write more blog posts in general. I have several in the pipeline, I promise... and on top of that, book 2 of the Unknown Road series (Forked Roads Back) is now starting to be published. See, I told you it was busy!
I hope everyone is keeping well and staying safe. I also hope people are wearing masks... both in shops and on the tube. Despite the upping of police presence and increased fines, I’m still seeing too many people without masks on. I‘m wearing mine to keep my community safe.... and I’d like to think other people are doing the same! #wearadamnmask
